The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.
