The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
