New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
