New Trump Doctrine Identifies Europe's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Shortfall of Racism?

During his initial presidency, commentators often suggested that Donald Trump's remarks should be interpreted earnestly rather than literally. Yet, real-world experience indicate that that formula may have got it backwards.

An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy alongside a series of statements from administration officials, presidential allies, and the former president have sparked potentially one of the most profound challenges for Atlanticism, the security framework that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Financial Contributions to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas The initial complaint centered on Europe's perceived refusal to pay for its own defense, his vision has now embraced a far more alarming outlook.

Colored by racism and a staggering contempt for Europe's political institutions and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he has rarely visited and mostly seen from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

"His recent interview lacking in clear ideological coherence is nevertheless full of something else: the muddled anxiety of an older man confronted with demographic shifts."

A conspiratorial worldview, which has already influenced harsh U.S. immigration and policing policies, is now clearly to be shaping Washington's prism of Europe.

A Xenophobic Thesis

According to this logic, migration from developing nations causes a weakening of European countries, rendering them "weak" under "stupid" leadership and paving the way for their demise. This is an unabashedly xenophobic ideology, with Trump and his circle making clear their support for nationalist movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of this race-baiting is familiar, its specific implications for the continent's defense are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his adherents—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the dissolution of the European Union—all politics is inherently transactional. However, while the previous argument was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a declining Europe is undeserving because of its embrace of diversity.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump joins these dots in a form of rhetorical loop. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a divided Europe. Trump then declares Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the rifts in Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European unity—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at perhaps the most critical moment for Europe in decades, with a devastating war in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Kyiv facing persistent threats of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for not listening to European leaders.

The European Response

This situation requires a robust reaction from European leadership. While some leaders, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been forceful in their rebuttals, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have continued with a policy of seeking to placate the U.S. administration.

On Tuesday, the UK government refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

The spokesperson stated, "He enjoys a strong relationship with the American leader and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is committed to working with both to achieve better outcomes for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that the president intends what he says and says them consistently. It is past time to abandon the pretense otherwise.
