Larian Studios Clarifies Its Use of AI Tools for New Project
The developer behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its next major project, sparking significant anticipation within the gaming community. However, recent comments from the studio's co-founder have introduced a new dimension to the discussion, addressing the studio's approach toward machine learning.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a recent clarification, the studio's founder explained that the company is utilizing machine learning for particular supporting tasks. These encompass enhancing pitch decks, producing initial concept art, and creating placeholder dialogue.
Notably, Vincke made clear that the shipping assets in the game will be created exclusively by actual writers. "Our team is writing everything manually," he affirmed.
We are continuously expanding our roster of concept artists and are actively putting together writing teams.
As concept art is being particularly mentioned — we currently have twenty-three concept artists and have job openings for more artists.
Everything we do is additive and aimed at having people spend more time on the creative process.
Any AI system implemented properly is additive to a developer's workflow, not a replacement for their craft.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The admission of using AI at first sparked backlash among some the fanbase. In response, Vincke offered additional detail on online platforms.
"Our team utilizes AI tools to research ideas, in the same way we use the internet and physical media," he wrote. "During the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then swap out with authentic illustrations."
He added, "We've hired talent for their creative vision, not for their ability to follow what a AI generates."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had previously broken down the company's focused approach to machine learning, grouping its use into three main pillars:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like polishing mocap data, dialogue cleanup, and pipeline-specific tasks like adjusting assets for various species.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to speedily create rough mock-ups of scenarios to experiment with concepts prior to complete development.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how machine learning could one day facilitate innovative player agency, specifically in managing player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.
He specifically noted that core creative disciplines — including writing — are are absolutely not fields where the company is cutting human input. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact roles.
"Our studio is not shipping a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not planning on reducing creatives to replace them with AI," Vincke summarized.
