Israeli citizens commemorate second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Citizens have come together around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"The aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A senior representative familiar with the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official said the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- Future management of the territory
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location seems like home now and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."
"After we see all home returned, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist a participant remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Research now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the western district, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"When the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, notably my little child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported another two fatalities had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, health workers said.
