Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
